Not many new images are captured at present as I am writing on an e-book. Browsing through my archive for that purpose, brought back this image. I was walking around Camogli just to see if I could discover some interesting scenes, as I looked over the edge of what appeared to be a roof-top parking place. I love anything that has to do with shadows and silhouettes! Here I chose a vantage point that allowed me to shoot straight agains the sun. This gives better control of the shadows. Better than shooting from the side.

From Piazza Navona in Rome earlier this year. I was fascinated by the dramatic expressions of the statues, and the pigeons showing no respect whatsoever. Sometimes when I start shooting in a new location it takes a little time to "warm up" and then pigeons or seagulls are easy targets.

I won't claim to have "done as the Romans" but we had some fun at the Colosseum! There was not enough light to see a reflection of Trond but we solved it by using the flash light function on his cell phone. That is how only his eye can be lit and the rest of his face left dark.

My new friend Jeffrey Chapman pointed out that in a picture with motion he would actually like to see some motion. My first instinck here was to try panning but instead I tried to stand completely still and instead freeze the background. I think the shutter speed was 1/30 second. Or at least -ish :-)

I was fascinated by how the colour of the reflection balanced the boat. Usually you would want space in front of a moving boat but I bended the rule because of the visual mass top right, created by the yellow colour.

The sailing bit of Musto Millet Ski Yachting took place in Oslo today.  I went out with my local sailing club.The wind disappeared after two races, though. But I love the reflections so I didn't really mind. I think the light is really beautiful when it shines through dark clouds.

This is another mix of showroom dummies and shoppers. I try to find a street where the sun shines straight in. Sometimes all it takes is to put on my "tourist glasses" to spot a "new" location. This type of architectural image I find adifficult to keep free of barrel distortion and converging verticals. The filter I use in Photoshop is Filter -> Distort -> Lens Correction.

The beach in Brighton is a popular place for people to walk the dog. Facing south - the sun rises and sets on each side of the beach at the spring and mid-autumn solstice. I finally invested in radio triggers for my flashes. So this image is from my first assignment with the new triggers. When using the flash off-camera you can either use a cable, infra-red or radio signals. The spiral cable that also transmits the aperture, shutter speed and ISO is simply not long enough. The next option is a longer cable but then you in principle need to set these values

More fun with reflections in the water of Oslo harbour basin. The top image is flipped horisontally and 180 degrees. In the second image I was fascinated by the ripples. the third image is the reflection of a ferry, flipped vertically. You can see the trees on top of the rampant of Akerhus Fortress.

This sunday was spent on a workshop using studio light. We worked with two models and this is Jeanette from Dream Models in Oslo. Anette was the makeup-artist. Combining the afternoon sky with the studio light fascinated me in the first image, and in the second image I used an angle that would show the reflection in the piano.

With minus 20 degrees Celsius I am surprised that the water in Oslo Harbour has not frozen. Instead there is this fascinating swirling frost smoke that really stands out when it is shot agains the setting sun. It can almost look like waves but the sea is flat. The green to the right is the "wall" of the dock, reflected. I keep forgetting to bring bread but these ducks haven't given up on me...

We spent New Year's Eve with friends in Devon, and this image is from a walk along a riverside. It shows trees reflected in a pond, and a rope swing hanging from above. I made it a point to place the swing in an "empty" area of the image.

I have figured out that 30 seconds is okay as a starting point with the camera on manual mode. You need time to light around the subject. I started with f/16 and adjusted up or down until the image was light enough but not burnt out. Use one focus point, focus on the eye and switthc to manual focusing. The subject has to sit compeltely still. Work on the eyes only once, to retain sharpness. I

For both of these images I have chosen to set the focus on the glass I am shooting through, and not what you actually see ouside the window or in the reflection. One tip is to try and hold the camera pointing 90 degrees onto the glass. For the image with the reflection this would obviously not work, as all you would see was a nerd with a camera :-) But choose an aperture that keeps the spots on

It was snowing in Oslo on monday night - which inspired me to browse through some earlier winter shots. A sneak preview from last night with the Foto Femme girls. We were trying out the painting with light technique. This image is taken with a 30 second shutter speed and a flashlight, in a completely dark room. The challenge is managing to sit still.... some room for improvement I guess :-)

The first image shows the tram I am sitting on, reflected in the front window of the bus behind it. The second image is taken at a slow shutter speed as the tram turns, so only the couple to the right is sharp. The third image is a baby on a passing tram. I saw the scene come up and couldn't think of an other option but to switch to auto, to manage to capture the scene before it disappeared.

A band that had a concert in Oslo tonight has a song called Hjernen er alene, which literally means The brain is alone. I asked the people who set up the light for this dog - if it was for some reason? The lady explained that the dog was called The Brain. And was the dog of the lead singer in the band. The longest lasting challenge of the year is the weekly submissions to the "Photographer of the Week" contest in the camera club. There are two categories - digital and paper. The competition ended yesterday and I landed a second place in the digital category. 13 points, just one point below Roy who won with 14 points.  I love the exitement! I selected a"Sunny" white balance to get the crisp clear blue. Also remember to set the focus point on the silhouettes and underexpose by 1-2 stops, to ensure that you get sharp silhouettes and avoid a burnt-out sky. The Maasai are one of the largest of the 42 tribes in Kenya. On a recent trip we went to visit a quarry that had been "transformed" into a village inhabited by representatives of some of the tribes. We saw the different types of houses they lived in. A mother and her daughter lives in this house temporarily.

The first shot is of people coming off a bridge. The second shot is a cyclist standing on a "brick lump" and his shadow falls towards me. The images have been given different split toning presets in Photoshop, and of course  flipped upside down. Aker Brygge is a great place for photographing shadows, due to the pattern in the brickwork.

Creating depth in an image can be done by using lead-in lines to draw the eye into the picture.

17 countries participated and Norway came in 7th. My image "Jump" was selected for Norways national team. It became one of the three Norwegian highest score images with 18 points each. Every week we have an informal competition in the camera club. Usually it is the photographer who shows his or her pictures who is the sole jury. Taking pictures at night require a high ISO and your images will most likely be quite grainy, which again often makes a good b/wh. After capturing the first shot I wondered if the scene would look better from a lower angle. Even if the silhouette of the man is easy to interpret in both pictures I ended up with the first shot as my favourite. You see more of the boats on the left, and his head still goes clear of the horizon.

It is fun to capture reflections in car windows and bonnets. If two planes are at an angle with each other you can capture two different versions of the same subject in the same image. You need: 1) A puddle 2) A sunny day These reflections work best when the sun lights up your subject. Move around the puddle until you see your subject reflected in the puddle. This time it ment a very low viewpoint, like 30 cm above the ground. Focus on the building. Check your historgram because you may have to underexpose to get all the details from the reflection.
