Akershus fortress - the rampant

I selected a"Sunny" white balance to get the crisp clear blue. Also remember to set the focus point on the silhouettes and underexpose by 1-2 stops, to ensure that you get sharp silhouettes and avoid a burnt-out sky.

For the second-to-last shot I have converted to b/wh and then tinted the image.
The last one is only converted to s/wh. Simon was my model here and since the picture is taken from a lower level I asked him to come a bit closer so that I actually could see his legs.

Norwegian Photographic Society

My "Kindergarten" picture was accepted in the 2009 autumn national competition.

This is a shot from my neighborhood. The text on the door to the left means "Kindergarten".

To me, this emphasizes the value of beeing in a camera club. In an earlier meeting we were allowed to bring the photos we were considering to use. I brought a version of this wall, but without the child. The feedback i got was that the message would be stronger if there was also a child in the image. So I went back after work and waited. This is the result.

I can't wait to see the rest of the awarded images on Flickr now! Search for NSFF KU and you will mimimum find the images from the spring competition.

Maasai Mother and Daughter

The Maasai are one of the largest of the 42 tribes in Kenya. On a recent trip we went to visit a quarry that had been "transformed" into a village inhabited by representatives of some of the tribes. We saw the different types of houses they lived in. A mother and her daughter lives in this house temporarily.

Shadows & Light at Aker Brygge

The first shot is of people coming off a bridge.
The second shot is a cyclist standing on a "brick lump" and his shadow falls towards me.

The images have been given different split toning presets in Photoshop, and of course  flipped upside down.

Aker Brygge is a great place for photographing shadows, due to the pattern in the brickwork.

Lead-in lines

Creating depth in an image can be done by using lead-in lines to draw the eye into the picture.

Panning and Composition

It is difficult to create a composition when you are panning. Usually you end up with only the subject sharp and then not much of interest in the rest of the picture. Try to choose a background that will add value.

In this shot I was following the girl with a shutter spped of approx. 1/30 seconds, as her friend slowed down to hang on to the bike. She is sharp and he is semi sharp. As he is moving - but not as fast as her.

The two people in the background are completeley blurred as they were sitting stil.

Yay! Picture of the week today!

Every week we have an informal competition in the camera club. Usually it is the photographer who shows his or her pictures who is the sole jury. The subject today was "reflection" and I won with this shot which you can read more about HERE. I am until further notice ranked second in the Photographer of the year competition. Trying to shake KRISTIN off. But overall she is still ahead of me :-)
Today's photographer was Torkil Færø. Who is a freelance doctor and photographer. You can see a few of his famous shots in this article (in Norwegian) HERE.

If you only buy ONE photography book this year

My favourite photography book came in 5th on Amazon in "Art & Photography" this year. View the entire list HERE.

Setting a Custom White Balance

Have you evere wondered why shots you take inside tend to have an orange colour?
This is a video on setting the white balance manually on a Canon.
